The Most Generous Soul

A tip of the hat to the Department of Statewhich had the guts and good sense to express its opposition (sort of) to congressional legislation creating an office for monitoring “anti-Semitism.”

The bill passed both houses of Congress by voice vote and was signed into law by President Bush last week.

It’s a very silly and dangerous measure.

“We opposed creation of a separate office for the purpose and opposed the mandating of a separate annual report,” a State Department spokesman told the press. “We expressed the view that separate reports on different religions or ethnicities were not warrantedgiven that we already prepare human rights reports and religious freedom reports on 190 countries.” [Anti-Semitism office planned at State DepartmentBy Nicholas KralevWashington TimesOctober 142004]

But the Department isn’t dumb. Having seen how easily it passedthe spokesman explained also why the law really wasn’t a problem after all:

“It’s more of a bureaucratic nuisance than a real problem. We are not going to fight a bill that has gained such political momentum.”

You bet your pension you’re not.

The bill did notof coursepass Congress because there was such a massive groundswell of grassroots support for it. It passed because Jewish organizations demanded itand no sitting politician wants to get on the wrong side of these groups.

That’s why the bill passed the Senate by agreement and the House by voice voteóthere’s no debate and no record of how anyone voted.

Pushed by the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith and most other major Jewish organizationsthe bill requires the Department to record acts of physical violence against Jewstheir propertycemeteries and places of worship abroadand the response of local governments to them.

As the Department notesit already issues reports on “human rights” abusesand there’s no special reason why attacks on Jews should be recorded separately.

Why not reports about attacks on other groupsóblack peoplewhite peoplewomenChristians?

If the lobbies that represent such categories can make enough noise for itthere would be such reports. The State Department could then spend all its time recording what should be the concern of local police departments.

The Department was right the first time that the bill requires a duplication of what it already doesbut that’s not what’s really wrong with the law.

What’s wrong with it is that it opens one more door to the criminalization of thought and expression.

The bill requires only that acts of physical violence against Jews be recordednot expressions of anti-Semitismbut you can bet the bill’s promoters will soon be pushing to include what they claim are “anti-Semitic” expressions to be reported as well. As press reports noted”among the attacks that prompted passage of the bill” was “the recent claim by former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad that Jews ‘rule the world by proxy.’”

That’s the sort of stuff the State Department will now have to record and report about?

Last year the British Parliament debated a bill that would have allowed British citizens to be extradited to European Union countries to stand trial for expressing “xenophobia and racism” if the expressions were broadcast into countries where they are illegalas in several European countries they are. It didn’t passand the law just enacted doesn’t do thatbut all of it is part of the same pattern.

The pattern is the criminalization of thoughtófor “xenophobia,” “racism,” “white supremacy,” “homophobia,” “anti-Semitism,” “patriarchalism,” and any number of other ismsmanias and phobias unknown to any language a few years ago.

What really drives the crusade to criminalize thought and expression is not any legitimate revulsion against real violence (which is already illegal) but the compulsion of powerful and well-organized lobbies to muzzle criticism.

Neoconservatives are already claiming that criticism of them is really “anti-Semitism,” which is what they also said about the recent FBI investigation of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) for espionage for Israeland what the Anti-Defamation League and many other Jewish spokesmen said about Mel Gibson’s movie”The Passion of the Christ,” and what the same groups say about criticism of Israel or of U.S. policies toward Israel.

It might be a lot simpler if the State Department had to report on what isn’t anti-Semitism.

The list would be a lot shorter.

What is worrisome about the new law is not that the Department will have to duplicate what it already does but that what is not anti-Semitism at alllet alone violencebut merely criticism and dissent will be demonized and curbed.

Maybe in some minds that was the real purpose of the law all along. And maybebefore the congressmen and senators all shouted their approval of the measurethey should have talked and thought about it a little more than they did.

And sohe’s really been aggressive about thisin a new way. AMY GOODMAN: How much attention have these signing statements gotten? The most recent onethe USA PATRIOT Actwhich at firstwellthere was a question — there’s a lot of controversy about it. Explain how that happenedthe more recent onethen we’ll go back to torture. CHARLIE SAVAGE: How the signing statement happened or how we –? AMY GOODMAN: Yeahhow much attention it has gotten and what it means for senators who said that they weren’t going to sign off on this unless they got certain concessionsand then this evisceratingthe signing statement eviscerating these concessions. CHARLIE SAVAGE: I understand. Wellinitiallyvery little attention. No one is used to paying attention to these things. These are not something that’s been regularly a part of the political fabric of our country. The traditional way that it happens is if a president gets a bill that he doesn’t likehe either swallows the provisions he doesn’t like and signs the whole thingor he vetoes itbecause he says‘I can’t live with this,’ and then Congress can try to override the veto or notdepending on the strength. That’s how traditionally it’s supposed to work under the Constitution. And the Bush team has never vetoed a single bill in the five years he’s been president now. Insteadthey’ve used these signing statements to say that ‘we will takeyou knowthe bits that we want and ignore the other parts.’ And no one has been used to looking at these things. SoBush issued this signing statement on the PATRIOT Act on March 9ththe same day that he signed the bill. But it went almost unnoticed. There were a few legal specialist blogs that sort of took note of it in a wry way. I wrote this article that came out in Friday’s paper. And there was a huge responseas people realized what he had done again. But that was the first time in the mainstream mediaat leastthat it’s received any kind of attention. AMY GOODMAN: Nowthe previous signing statement happened over New Year’s. Can you talk about thataround torturespecificallywhat the bill sayswhat the ban on torture is aboutwhat’s called the McCain billand thenwhat the signing statement says? CHARLIE SAVAGE: Absolutely. Wellyou may recall that there was a huge controversy in Congress last year with John McCain trying to make clear in federal law that it is illegal to torturefor a U.S. official to torture a detainee in U.S. custodyno matter where that detainee isanywhere in the world. I think most specialists would say that was already illegal. But the Bush administration had come up with some contorted arguments about why maybe they could get around it if it was outside the U.S. border. And sothere was a long fight in Congress in which McCain was trying to get this passed. And Bush kept threatening to veto it and fought it hard. Dick Cheney personally came to Congress to say“Don’t do thisdon’t do this.” But Republicans came together with Democrats; they passed this overwhelmingly in both chambers. It was such a show of force in both chambers that Bush could not veto it. They had the strength to override the veto. So thenhe signed the bill. He invited McCain into the White House and said‘Ohthis is a good thing. It’s going to help us with our image,’ even though he had been fighting it all along. And thenafter McCain had left and everyone had gone homehe again issued another one of these signing statements. This was on the Fridaylate in the evening before — on the weekend of New Year’s Evewhen everyone had gone homeessentiallysaying‘By the wayI’m commander-in-chiefand I don’t really have to pay attention to this if I don’t want to. If it’s the national security is involvedI can do whatever I want.’ And againyou knowit was New Year’s weekend; no one really paid attention. And I saw in a legal blogwhen I came into work the next weekthat someone was taking note of this and started exploring it. And sure enoughthat’s what he had saidand that’s what it meant. I called the White House and asked them for an explanationand they put me on the phone with someone to serve as their spokesmanwho said‘Yesyou knowwe intend to follow this lawbut a situation could arise where we don’t have to.’ And sothat’s what it means. And you knowthere was a sense of outrage over thatincluding among Republican senators like Lindsey Graham and John Warner and especially John McCain: ‘We had negotiated this. This is what it means. We passed the law. You’ve got to follow it.’ And the question with both of the PATRIOT Act and the torture thing isthis is just a piece of paper in which he says‘I don’t have to do this if I don’t want to.’ But it’s not proof that he’s not going to do itand it’s not proof that he hasn’t done it. AMY GOODMAN: Can Congress do anything about this? CHARLIE SAVAGE: Wellthat’s a good question. If they have the political willthey can try to pass moretougher legislation. They can try to withhold funding for things. They could launch investigations. Right nowCongress ishoweverdominated by the same party as the President. They are not particularly willing toor have not proven themselves particularly willing until nowwith a few exceptionsto be too aggressive in conducting oversight on what he’s doing. “The US Secret Govt Rears Its Ugly Head in the Bush Cabal”

If the United States truly practiced the concept of “liberty and justice for all,” retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Al Martin would be the one with the national radio talk show and prestigeand Ollie North would be having to hide out in a remote siteor better yetin prison.

George W. BushJeb BushGeorge Bush Sr.Richard Armitageand others sure would not be in the positions of power they are. Some people would not be sitting in prisons for what they knew about the Iran-Contra scandal of the 1980s. Other people would not have died under odd circumstances since thenpossibly because someone was afraid they’d talk too muchor find out too much.

And two books I’ve recently readAl Martin’s “The Conspirators: Secrets of an Iran-Contra Insider” [National Liberty PressLLCP.O. Box 43PrayMontana 59065Toll-free 1-866-317-1390http://www.almartinraw.com2002] and Uri Dowbenko’s “Bushwhacked: Inside Stories of True Conspiracy” [Conspiracy DigestPrayMont.Toll-free 1-866-317-1390http://www.conspiracydigest.com2002]would be required reading in all U.S. college government courses.

But of courseas the Denzel Washington character says in Philadelphiawe don’t live in a perfect worldnow do we?

The books made my head spinonce I finally found some time to really read them and not just skim over them. They deserve careful readings by anyone interested in learning more about why the U.S. bullies much smaller countries like IraqSyriaIranand Nicaragua.

If you want to know why the Bush administration is on the verge of invading Syria when its adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq are not even completebuy these books. They connect the dots between North and the Bush syndicate – and even prominent Democrats that profited from and helped cover up Iran-Contra and Iraqgatesuch as Janet Reno. They pull no punches. They give credence to your suspicions that something is frightfully wrong with the direction Bush Inc. are leading us.

Martinone of the bravest whistle-blowers who has graced the U.S.was actually an officer in the powerful Office of Naval Intelligence and a middle player in Iran-Contrathe scheme that on the surface illegally sold American weapons to Iranthen used that money to illegally fund the right-wing Contras’ war on the leftist Nicaraguan government. But as he showsIran-Contra was a lot more than that; it was bank fraudsavings and loan frauddrug runningapparent murderfalsely imprisoning people who knew too much.

Martin describes numerous meetings with none other than Jeb Bushthe man who stole Florida for his brother in the 2000 election heist. At oneBushwho Martin calls a “real sharp cookie,” tells him how to illegally “short” stock in companies to make a hefty profit that can then be sent to the Contras. Martin explains how he incorporated dummy companies with Bush that were used to funnel illegal money between the Middle EastCentral Americaand other regions.

“Jeb likes any kind of fraud – bankingsecurityreal estateoil and gasgold bullionaircraft brokerage,” Martin writes. “Neil [Bush] was much more in the real estate end of the fraud. But George Jr. – I would classify as an insurance fraudsterin terms of his Iran-Contra profiteering….At the top of that [Iran-Contra fraud] pyramidthere are people like George Bush [Sr.] and a few others like Oliver North. George Bush is at the very pinnacle of that pyramid.”

This is the same Bush Sr.who Martin quotes as saying”The greatest reliever of stress is shredding documents.”

As Martin writesthe repercussions of Iran-Contra did not stop in the 1980s. American taxpayers are still paying for all of the banks and S&Ls that failed due to the fraud.

Americans are still financing the illegal and immoral adventures in the Middle East and Latin America of this “secret government,” a term for the Iran-Contra U.S. government hijackers of the 1980s who exist stronger than ever under Bush Jr.

Many obvious players in Iran-Contrasuch as North and Bushare still heavily involved in the current U.S. secret plans to do whatever the hell the rich and powerful forces that really run our government want to do.

In a chilling precursorMartin describes Operation Orpheusa secret plan in the 1980s to fake a nuclear attack by Russia to cover up Iran-Contra misdeeds and install a military dictatorship in the U.S.

It was a similar plan to Operation Northwoodsanother phony terrorism campaign which some of the late President Kennedy’s military advisorsled by then-Army Gen. Lyman L. Lemnitzerdevised to help justify an invasion of Cuba in 1962 to overthrow Fidel Castro.

Among the ideas these U.S. government officials discussed were killing innocent Americans in cities and blaming Cuban “terrorists,” blowing up U.S. ships and blaming Castroblaming Cuba if the spaceship with John Glenn exploded [as some blamed Arab terrorists for the explosion of the Space Shuttle Columbia this year]provoking a war by flying a plane over Cubaand paying a Cuban official to attack U.S. forces at the Guantanamo naval base. Kennedy rejected the phony campaign and was assassinated the following year. Some said military planners enraged by JFK’s rejection of Operation Northwoods could have participated in the assassination.

Now it seems as if Bush Jr. has accepted a similar plan – both bin Laden and Hussein were trained and financed by U.S. military and intelligence agents at one timeand both somehow escaped capture and death in the latest military operations.

Were deals made with bin Laden and Hussein? Is this “war on terrorism” as phony as the previous U.S. military schemes to justify invasions and funneling more funds to the military-industrial complex and even implementing a military dictatorship with Bush Jr. as head puppet today?

There are many more ties between the 1980s scandal and the present one. For instanceU.S. Sen. Rick Santoruma Caucasian Republican from Pennsylvaniawas among the beneficiaries of the Iran-Contra scandalMartin says. Santorum is now a key supporter of Israel who is leading the charge in the Senate to invade Syria and other countries. He and Sen. Barbara Boxera Jewish Democrat from Californiaplan to introduce legislation that would set the stage for the Syrian invasionif they haven’t done so already.

Rep. Eliot Engela Jewish Democrat from New Yorkand Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinena Hispanic Republican from Floridaintroduced similar legislation in the U.S. House on April 11before the Iraqi mission to make that country another U.S. puppet state was finished.

Predictablythey called Syria a “rogue nation” [idle question: When has Syria defied the UN and bombed another sovereign nation back to the Stone Agekilling and maiming thousands of innocent people in the process?]. They accused Syria of supporting terroristswhich it doesbut only the kind that fights back against Israeli-sponsored terrorism against Palestinians. What one side calls terrorists the other side calls soldiers – see http://www.counterpunch.org/sharon.html for Israeli leader Ariel Sharon’s record of war crimes. They said Syria has these dreaded “weapons of mass destruction,” which UN inspectors and U.S. troops have yet to find in Iraqanother country the U.S. invaded supposedly because it had these awful weapons.

Heyif the U.S. wants to find “weapons of mass destruction” so muchall it has to do is look in its own backyard. Or the backyard of Israelwhich has more than 400 nuclear weaponsa primary reason why countries like IraqSyriaand Iran want more potent weapons to provide a balance in the region. But of coursethe U.S. won’t look in its own backyard or the backyard of its favorite lapdog statenext to Great Britain.

The U.S. secret government wants to make sure certain other countries don’t keep the weapons it developed and sold to them at one time [yesto Iraqto Syriato Iranand others] to make a quick buck. That’s not hypocriticalit’s just part of what we have to do in the war on terrorismright? Wrong. It’s part of our “leaders” latest attempts to divert our attention from their selfish plans to control the Middle East and ultimately the planetand inadequacies in providing for our domestic needs.

Meanwhilethe propaganda war against Syria rages in the mainstream mediaand public support to invade that country because “heywe will have to do it someday” will increase. Syria will be an even easier “opponent” than Iraq wasas it spends even less on national defense than Iraqaccording to the well-respectednon-partisan Center for Defense Information.
Syria is near the bottom of the worldwide listspending only $1 billioncompared to Iraq’s $1.4 billion and the United States’ $399 billion [add another $100 billion or so for the Iraqi invasion]. Israel is a respectable 14th in military spending at $10.6 billionwith the only other Middle Eastern country higher being Saudi Arabiawhich is eighth at $21.3 billion.

And the Secret Teamers want us to believe we should fear countries with relatively small militaries like IraqSyriaand Iran? Are we really that stupid?

AnywaySantorum profited from the International Signals and Controls scandalwhere the Pennsylvania company shipped missiles and component parts to Iran and Iraq during the Iran-Contra daysMartin writes. At least one official from that company ended up in prisonbut obviously not Santorum.

The list goes on – these books need indexes so you can look up certain people. Besides the Bush clanMartin implicates Bush’s Interior Secretary Gale NortonDeputy Secretary of State Richard Armitageand White House National Security Council aide Elliott AbramsRenoBill ClintonU.S. Rep. Henry Hydethe adulterer who tried to drive Clinton from office for lying about an affairformer Reagan National Security Advisor Frank Carlucciand former Republican presidential candidates Steve Forbes and Bob Doleamong others. Among those who deserve commendation are numerous reporters who tried to get bits of the story outand Sen. John Kerrywho headed a commission that attempted to expose the truth.

Some fellow progressives might bristle at the mention of Clinton and Renobut I’ve never been naïve enough to think that Clinton got so far merely by making goody-goody deals. I just liked Clinton’s politics on the surface better than other recent presidentsand I enjoyed the way he infuriated conservativeswho hate Clinton so much they are wasting millions of dollars to open a “Counter Clinton Library” in Little Rock later this year.

Have liberals opened a “Counter Reagan Library” or “Counter Bush Library” in the cities that house their libraries? No – that just lends more evidence on who the real hatemongers are in this countrythe Limbaughs and Norths and Liddys that Clinton loved to piss off. But I admit I’ve overlooked Clinton’s excessesthough not near as much as the average Bush-can-do-no-wrong supporter overlooks his.

Martin also exposes Israeli involvement in Iran-Contra and Iraqgatean important link in the current situation in the Middle East. Hard-line Zionists will accuse me of being anti-Jewish for daring to criticize Israel. I may be anti-Sharon administration like I’m anti-Bush administration. But as much as certain people yell at me that I’m anti-JewishI’m not. Just as many Bush supporters call me anti-American for opposing the anti-American-ideals Bush administrationmany Israeli supporters call me anti-Jewish for opposing the far rightbulldoze-the-Palestinians-out-of-existence Sharon government.

Nowa conspiracy theoristthat’s a different matter. Look at this situation with Syria. Rather than focusing on the declining economyrunaway budget deficitsgrowing chasm between the haves and have-notsand other important domestic issuesBush administration officialsmany Congressional Republicans and Democratsand the wealthy international interests behind them are salivating over the prospect of invading and controlling Syria next. Then it’s on to IranEgyptand Saudi Arabia. Bush Inc. are playing right into Sharon’s handsif they are not directly conspiring with Sharonwhich I suspect is more likely the case. By the time the U.S.-Israeli crusaders are donethe Middle East will lie in ruins and be ruled over by a Jewish-American King accountable only to multinational oil companies.

While many Americans are giddy about our “victory” in Iraqit was like an NFL Super Bowl champion playing a junior high school football squad. When one side spends $399 billion-plus on high-tech weapons and the other side spends $1.4 billion on scud missiles and used tanksis anything fair about that contest?

Ironicallythe U.S. kept claiming the Iraqis weren’t “playing fair” for faking surrenders and other tricksbut that’s like the NFL team claiming the junior high team was playing dirty for trying some trick plays [excuse the sports analogy – in a past life I was a sports reporter – it’s the best one I can think ofthough I know war is by no means a game].

Another note of personal disclosure here: I am a Caucasian American born in WashingtonD.C.whose family originally derives from LithuaniaIrelandEnglandand Austria. I married a woman who was born in Pennsylvania whose parents are from Syria. Thereforemy two young children are half Syrian American. We have many relatives in Syria. I admittedly do not want my tax dollars used to kill and maim and make homeless my relatives in Syriaas they have already been used to kill and maim and make homeless thousands of innocent Iraqis and innocent Afghans.

I do not buy the Bush-Cheney Inc. line that people’s lives in these countries will be improved – ask the families of those killed if the U.S. military action improved their lives. Obviouslythose who are dead would speak otherwiseif they could. Ask the families of the more than 100 American and British soldiers who died if this invasion was really worth it in a few yearswhen another dictator takes control of Iraq.

Did I miss itor have all the ruling clans in Afghanistan held free elections and decided not to kill each other? What about Kuwaitanother American colony still run by an unelecteddictatorial prime minister 12 years after we “freed” that country? Don’t tell me Kuwait elects a national assembly – that body has even less power than the U.S. Congress against the dictators in the White House.

Beyond thatI understand the government in Syria is a dictatorship. But I also understand that I live under a more subtle dictatorshipone that can install a leader in power who was not elected by the majority of voters and control other leaders through corporations and money. I can write and scream and march and protest all I wantand Bush-Cheney Inc. are not going to listen to my request to stop these immoralidiotic invasions. Millions of people can protestMichael Moore can use the Oscars stage to protestand Bush barely can get his cocaine-and-alcohol-destroyed brain working long enough to ask Karl Rove”What does ‘fictitious’ mean?” Because I refuse to give a penny to any politicianmuch less hundreds of thousands of dollars that is the going rate for bribery these daysI have about as little influence on my government as the average Iraqi had on Hussein or the average Syrian has on its dictatorship.

The challenge is to find ways to live under our forms of dictatorships without destroying each other. Garner has strong links to both the international arms industry and a Jewish lobby groupaccording to syndicated columnist Molly Ivins. He has visited Israel as the guest of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs and signed a statement in October 2000 blaming the Palestinians for the violence in the region after the collapse of peace talks – which Bush stopped when he took over in early 2001.

Garner has also commended the Israeli army for its “remarkable restraint.” This is the same army that showed such “remarkable restraint” in killing thousands of Palestiniansbulldozing thousands of homesand even killing a few American and European peace activists like Rachel Corrie [see http://www.rachelcorrie.com/] who try to stop the violence.

The Israeli military has destroyed more than 7,000 Palestinian homes since the beginning of the Israeli occupation in 1967leaving 30,000 people homeless. Most home demolitions target civilians who have not been charged with any crime. The Caterpillar bulldozers that destroyed many homes and Rachel are partly financed by U.S. tax dollars – Israel is the world’s largest beneficiary of American military and economic aid. It receives more than $5 billion a year from the U.S.and 75 percent of those funds are spent on arms and equipment from U.S. corporations.

SoIsrael can use tanks and bulldozers and automatic weapons to kill Palestiniansand it’s OK. But when a few Palestinians fight back through suicide bomber missions – which I don’t condone but understand – they’re branded as dirty terrorists. At least three times as many Palestinians have died as Israelis in the last two years. Who are the terrorists here?

And now we claim Syria is harboring terrorists and even Iraqis who fled Baghdad. So are we going to bomb Idaho and Montana and other U.S. states because they give refuge to KKK members and anti-government U.S. terrorists like Tim McVeigh who bombed Oklahoma in 1995? How about Irelandwhich has terrorized the British since the 1920s? Ohthey’re white terroristsso we don’t mess with them. I forgot.

The bottom line is Bush-Cheney Inc.with help from many Republicans and Democrats in Congressare running a racist policy to exterminate Arabs and hand over control of the Middle East to wealthypowerful oil and real estate cronies.

My sister died in Florida – another reason why I dislike that state – and I suspect environmental causesperhaps pesticide poison from some fruit she might have picked from a tree and eaten. The medical staff of that Tampa hospital in 1965 and the county medical examiner were not exactly the most skilled – they didn’t even perform a complete autopsyor at least they won’t release such records. The cause of my sister’s death remains another mystery.

That experience has shaped my lifesent me head-long into searches that many people don’t dare takesuch as psychic medium sessionsporing over obscure books and documents in more obscure libraries and government offices for daysback-alley rendezvous in tough neighborhoodsand 5,000-mile walks through the heart of the global military-industrial complex. I don’t believe at face value anything anyone tells me – not even a family member. I listen politelyfor the most partbut I have to make my own investigationto search beyond the obvious surface clues for the underlying story.

As a freshman reporter for my college newspaper way back in 1978I didn’t turn away an eyewitness to the JFK assassination who wanted to share some insight that others wouldn’t digest. I not only listened to the manI wrote story after storyread book after bookinterviewed person after personwalked down dangerous alley after dangerous alleyfought off critic after criticignored threat after threatin a search that continues to this day.

That search leads me to believe that the Warren Commission’s conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in killing JFK was erroneousand that commission was covering up misdeeds by powerful peopleagenciesand institutions. Former and current government agents and military officialsmembers of the Mafiaanti-Castro Cubanswealthy far-right oil barons and industrialistsand members of the current secret government were most likely involved. When someone challenges me on this conclusionI say to themread the books I havetalk to the people I haveand then we’ll talk. When someone calls me a “conspiracy nut,” I say to themall I want is the truthand I don’t believe we have been told the truth about this.

And let me say something about conspiracies – conspiracies have existed as long as human beings have. The Bible and other books are full of such tales of conniving rulers and wannabe rulers plotting against people to consolidate their power. To ignore conspiracies just because you’re afraid of being labeled a “conspiracy nut” is to ignore a vital trend and component of our society that can lead you farther along on your path to the truth. To ignore conspiracies is to compromise your search for the truth.

The bottom line is our governmentour corporationsour mediaour institutionslied to us thenand have lied to us many times before and since. The most powerful government officials and corporate leaders have engaged in conspiracy after conspiracy since Day One. And we’ve let them with our silenceour inertiaour unwillingness to confront themour unwillingness to expose their misdeeds to the light of day and bring them to justice.

Exposing the lies has become a passion to mea reason to live. When a newspaper I work for refuses to publish something I writeI find another way to get it out. With the Internet – thank God Al Gore invented thathuh? – it is easier these days than it was back when I had to publish my own newsletterspamphletsand books. It’s easier to take a too-controversial-for-mainstream-journalism article to the Web than quit your job in protest and take a story on the powerful local defense establishment trying to shut down the nuclear freeze movement to the competition newspaperwhich I did in 1984.

The truth shall set you freesomeone saidbut I’m sure not yet free. I guess I have yet to really uncover as much of that truth as I think I can. Even thenI remain skeptical that I’ll ever really be freeexcept for perhaps in my own mind.

I’m most free when I read books like Martin’s and Dowbenko’s. “Bushwhacked” is a great complement to “The Conspirators,” as it further exposes the crimes of the powerfulusually-unseen-to-the-general-public forces that prop up the Bush regime and prior regimes. The book is an indictment of our system in which most people worship the wealthy and mindlessly justify their excessesand would rather watch Survivor on television than do something about helping us all really survive on this planet. For those who want to do somethingit provides much ammunition and insight we need to execute our plan of action.

I tell people again and again you cannot look at Bush on the surface. He appears to be a niceaffable doofus to many. But he is conniving and politically astutemore so than his father. He is more willing to engage in dirty campaigning than the former CIA director was. He is more willing to win at any costas we saw in the 2000 election. He is more willing to bomb civilians in some faraway land if he can gain politically from those deathsas we saw in Afghanistan and Iraq and probably will in Syria and other countries.

But to really know what Bush is about you must know something about the people around him and those who fund him. You must know something about the murky origins of DynCorpwhich Dowbenko explains began as an Air Force contractor in 1954 and has gained a reputation as a front company for the CIAperforming dirty tricks throughout the world. This Virginia-based “security” firm was one of Bush’s biggest campaign donors in 2000 and has been awarded all kinds of lucrative government contractsfrom protecting Afghan officials to providing “security” in Iraq.

“Even more sinister is the fact that DynCorp manages email and information systems for many federal investigation agencies like FBIDOJand SEC,” writes Dowbenkoone of the alternative media’s foremost writers who founded Conspiracy DigestAl Martin Rawand Steamshovel Press. “What does that mean? Whenever criminal behavior is detectedDynCorp controls the informationgiving it defacto power to subvert the process of law and cover up corporate-government criminal activities.”

Dowbenko includes a more-than-interesting chapter about Bush skeletons like a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency video allegedly showing Jeb and Dubya with a large amount of cocaine. There are more stories on how investment banker Catherine Austin Fitts was ambushed by corporate-government criminalsthe last known interview with the late best-selling author Malachi Martin on the “end of religion,” and bizarre mind control programming.

So is what’s in these booksand in this essayreally true? It’s hard to say what’s really true. Ultimatelywe all have to figure it out on our own. But I do believe in the law of karmathat what goes round comes round. No empirenot the Romansnot the Britishnot the U.S.lasts forever. Somedayour kids and their kids will pay for our sins. I just hope they understand that not everyone merely went along with the crowdjust as not every German went along with the Nazis in the 1930s.

So if you believe the Bush administration is controlled by a secret governmentwhat can you really do about it? For one thingexpose it to the light of day. Spread the wordvia whatever means you have. Let them know there are a lot of people on our planet who are fed up with their selfishviolent actions.

What’s the alternative? To do nothing? To live in fear? Better to light a candle than curse the darkness. Better to march a mile than sit around wringing your hands.

Better to read a book like “The Conspirators” or “Bushwhacked” that goes deeper than mere headlines than watch more CNN coverage that only skims the surface.

Albright criticizes Bush’s good vs evil rhetoric
LondonMarch 24IRNA-Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright Friday criticized the Bush administration’s newly unveiled national security strategy based on the good vs. evil rhetoric.

Albright said it was “more tragedy than strategy” that three years after the invasion of Iraq and the invention of the phrase “axis of evil,” the administration now highlights such a threat.

Demonstrations were held in more than 250 cities and towns throughout the U.S. and VoteToImpeach contingents and individuals carrying the Impeach Bush message were out in full force.

It is no wonder that so many more people are joining the campaign to remove BushCheneyRumsfeld and Ashcroft from office. Each and every day a new lie promoted by the administration unravels in full public view. It is no longer a secretif it ever wasthat the administration was planning to carry out a war to conquer Iraq from the first day it took office. While the people of the country were in a state of shock and mourningBush and high administration officials saw September 11 as an “opportunity” to escalate its plans for war against Iraq. The FAA reported that all four indestructible titanium Cockpit Voice Recorders from the doomed flights were destroyed in explosions that left alleged terrorist ringleader Atta?s paper passport unscathed. But at least one CVR survived intact. A Freedom of Information (FOI) request by Accuracy in Media for a transcript of the recorded cockpit conversations of the hijacked Boeing 757 that crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11 was refused by the FBI because ?it could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings.?

?What enforcement proceedings?? AIM wants to know. ?If the passengers succeeded in getting into the cockpitthere should be evidence of the struggle on the CVR. Ignoring the tricky question of how a plane allegedly flown straight into the ground by mutinying passengers came apart in mid-air. the FBI claimed that major debris – including a half-ton section of one of the plane?s wing-mounted engines – were ?blown by the wind? nearly eight miles from the main crash site. INTELLIGENCE EXPERTS DISPUTE OFFICIAL STORY
A German intelligence expert was one of the first officials to take issue with Washington?s version of 9.11. Andreas von Buelow served for 25 years on a parliamentary commission overseeing all three branches of German intelligence. His book In the Name of the State details the criminal activities of secret servicesincluding the CIA.

Von Buelow observed: ?The planning of the attacks was technically and organizationally a master achievement. To hijack four huge airplanes within a few minutes and within one hourto drive them into their targetswith complicated flight maneuvers! This is unthinkablewithout years-long support from secret apparatuses of the state and industry. in the analysis of political processes..

Also in Aug.President Valdimir Putin ordered Russian intelligence to warn Washington ?in the strongest possible terms? of imminent attacks on airports and government buildings. The week before Sept. 11a Pakistani student at Brooklyn?s New Utrecht High School pointed at the Twin Towers during a heated political argument and declared?Look at those two buildings. They won?t be here next week.? Several days before the attacka Jersey City student of Middle Eastern origins also warned classmates not to travel into lower Manhattan on the morning of Sept. 11. US corporations had already been tipped by a State Department warning issued worldwide. A copy of State?s Sept. 7 memo received by former Secretary of State George Schultz at his San Francisco office warned that Americans ?may be the target of a terrorist threat [from] extremist groups with links to Osama bin Laden?s al Qaeda organization?. This timely bulletin also reached airportswhere at least one prestigious passenger was warned. When San Francisco?s mayor called on Sept.10 to check the status of a flight he was planning to take into New York the following daya return call from a person Willie Brown described as an ?airport security man?told him to be ?extra cautious about air travel? on Sept. 11. Just as in Oklahoma Citythe FBI offices on the 22nd floor of the WTC were also deserted when they were destroyed by evidence-destroying explosions ? before the building came down.

FEMA URBAN RESCUERS DEPLOY IN NYC ? SEPT. 102001

On Sept. 11Federal Emergency Management Agency official Tom Kennedy told Dan Rather on-air that an elite FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team arrived in NYC the night before the ?surprise? attacks. ?We?re currently one of the first teams that was deployed to support the City of New York in this disaster. We arrived on late Monday night and went right into action on Tuesday morning.?

A flustered FEMA rep later told WorldNetDaily that ?In the heat of the moment?Kennedy had misspoken. Two FEMA teamshe correctedwere sent into Ground Zero the next day. It?s unlikely a paramilitary team leader would mistake a mission start two days before. In the weeks leading up to Sept.11the Bush ship of state was listing heavily. World leaders were bashing Bush?s for reneging on Kyoto?s carbon cutbacks. At homehis Big Oil cabinet faced certain congressional defeat over their bid to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Intended as $300 billion dollar ?fix? for corporations addicted to weapons contractsBush?s treaty-busting ?Missile Defense Shield? also faced a congressional thumbs down. Plus the economy was a major minus. During the previous three weeksthe Dow had dropped a dizzying 900 pointstaking $1 trillion into the digital void.

By late Oct.the really excellent news for President Bush was that he remained President Bush. Completed in late Aug.a $2 million media scrutiny of 170,000 uncounted Florida votes was about to be announced by the Wall Street JournalWashington PostNew York Times and CNN. According the London Telegraphthe results spelled ?bye-bye Bush?. A New York Times journalist involved in the recount project revealed that the Gore victory margin was big enough to create ?major trouble for the Bush presidency if this ever gets out.?

Steven Goldsteinspeaking for the owners of The Wall Street Journaltold reporters that the recount results would be kept from the public. ?Our belief is that the priorities of the country have changedand our priorities have changed,? The Pentagon cadre that once dominated American policy in the Middle East has disintegrated.

The decline of public support for the war and a widening Pentagon spy scandal have coincided with the departure or reassignment of several key Defense Department policy-makersmen who helped to formulate the Bush doctrine of preemptive war.

In August 2004 CBS news reported that the FBI was conducting an espionage investigation inside the office of the Secretary of Defense. Roughly one year laterthe FBI arrested Pentagon analyst Larry Franklin. He allegedly handed highly classified documents to a pro-Israeli lobbying group that in turn passed the documents to the government of Israela 26-page indictment said. The indictment referred tobut did not nameother officials of the Defense Departmentthe federal government and foreign officials.

Mr. Franklin had close ties to Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and to Undersecretary for Policy Douglas Feiththe CBS report said. Both men left the Pentagon after the FBI investigation became public. Mr. Wolfowitz moved to head the World Bankand Mr. Feith resignedciting the need to spend more time with his family.

Mr. Franklin had been brought from the Defense Intelligence Agency to work in the Pentagon’s Office of Special Plansa group formed in October 2002 to provide policy planning for Iraqaccording to sourcewatch.org.

Deputy undersecretary William Luti oversaw the OSP. In terms of influenceMr. Luti’s operation came to rival the CIA and the DIA as a source of pre-invasion intelligence and analysisanalysis that found its way to the president through the vice president’s office. A former Navy captainMr. Luti had worked in the vice president’s office before moving to the Pentagonthe Asia Times said.

UPI reporter Richard Sale cited a congressional memo that called Mr. Luti’s staff a loose group of acolytes and hired hands for Vice President Richard Cheney and his chief of staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libbybut the group was more than a mere collection of sycophantic brains for hire.

They shared a common vision of America’s role in the Middle Eastand Israel was the main component of that vision. America’s role was to shore up the region’s one true democracy while simultaneously opposing the governments of those nations that posed a real threat to Israel. The 9-ll attack galvanized the groupand they set their sights on Iraq. Their rise to power and ideological underpinning was documented in a New Yorker article by Seymour Hersh called “Selective Intelligence.”

Hersh noted that OSP Director Abram Shulsky studied under neoconservative icon Leo Strausswho viewed the world as a place where isolated liberal democracies lived in constant danger from hostile foreign elements. Those elements had to be confronted vigorously by strong leadersemploying deception if necessary.

Along with Mr. ShulskyMr. Luti had been credited with making the neoconservative vision prevail over the views of the CIA and the State Department. One Pentagon adviser said“Shulsky and Luti won the policy debate. They beat ’em – they cleaned up against State and the CIA,” Mr. Hersh reported.

In addition to the OSPMr. Luti oversaw the Pentagon’s Near East/South Asia Office. Working in that office was Richard Rhode. Both Mr. Rhode and Mr. Luti were frequently mentioned in FBI interviewswrote Mr. Saleciting federal law enforcement officials. The interviews dealt chiefly with the nature and extent of Mr. Rhodes contacts with Israel.

Mr. Luti was reassigned in the wake of the espionage investigation. Mr. Rhodes is on administrative leaveMr. Sale wroteattributing the information to two former senior U.S. intelligence officials.

At Defense Mr. Luti reported to Undersecretary Feiththe Pentagon’s No. 3 man.

Gen. Tommy Franks described Mr. Feith as academically well qualified for his positionbut also as a theoretician with impractical ideas. In his autobiography Gen. Franks said that the undersecretary had a reputation among the Pentagon’s uniformed officers for “confusing abstract memoranda with results in the field.”

As the Pentagon prepared for an invasion of Iraqtension built between Gen. Franks’ staff and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. In an effort to deal with his senior planners’ growing resentment towards Mr. Feiththe general told them“I’ll worry about OSDall of them – including Doug Feithwho’s getting a reputation around here as the dumbest f___ing guy on the planet.”

One of the unluckiest guys in the nation’s capital turned out to be the Iran analyst who worked in Mr. Feith’s office. When Mr. Franklin approached Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee with classified informationthey were already under surveillance by the FBI. Caught red-handedMr. Franklin began to cooperate with the FBI.

Mr. Rosen and Mr. Weissman were indicted just a few weeks after Mr. Franklin’s arrest. That indictment contained additional charges against Mr. Franklinand according to an August 2004 Knight Ridder story the investigation extends beyond the mid-level analyst.

Citing three sources close to the investigationthe story by Warren P. Strobel described a probe that had been going on for more than two years and had focused on other civilians in the Secretary of Defense’s office.

Investigators were also trying to determine if Pentagon officials gave highly classified American intelligence to the Iraqi National Congresswhich in turn may have passed the information to Iran. INC leader Ahmed Chalabi denied that his group had done anything wrong. Both investigations centered on Mr. Feith’s office.

In addition to these inquiriesthe FBI has been reviewing past counter-intelligence probes that did not result in prosecutions. Among those investigated were Mr. WolfowitzMr. Feith and Pentagon insider Richard Perlethe Asia Times reported.

While working for the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in 1978Mr. Wolfowitz was investigated for passing a classified document to Israel that dealt with an arms sale to an Arab government. The probe was eventually dropped.

Mr. Feith was fired from President Reagan’s National Security Council in 1982 for leaking classified data to Israelaccording to former counter-terrorism chief Vince Cannistrarothe UPI story said.

A close adviser to Secretary of Defense Donald RumsfeldMr. Perle was picked up by an FBI wire tap as he discussed classified information with an Israeli embassy official in 1970. He was a member of Sen. Henry “Scoop” Jackson’s staff at the timeMr. Lobe wrote.

Mr. Perle resigned from the chairmanship of the Defense Policy Board in 2003Jim Lobe reported in the Asia Times.

Mr. Perle quit the board after it was revealed that he had worked as a consultant to Global Crossinga bankrupt telecommunications company that was attempting to obtain Pentagon approval to be sold to a group of Asian investorsCBS news reported.

He had also advised investors at a conference held by Goldman Sachs on the implications of possible U.S. conflicts with Iraq and North Korea. He had attended a Defense Intelligence Agency briefing on the matter just three weeks beforethe Los Angeles Times said.

Mr. Perle has worked within the American defense establishment for more than 30 yearsand he has assisted and mentored Mr. LutiMr. Feith and Mr. Wolfowitz over the decades. His departure marked the beginning of the decline of the group that one author called “the Vulcans.”

As the wreckage of the neoconservative derailment at the Pentagon settlesthe Bush administration has lowered its expectations for what can be acheived in Iraqaccording to the paper China View.

One senior U.S. official involved in policy formulation told the paper that what the administration had hoped to achieve had never been realistic. It had begun a process of reevaluationand its goal now was to ensure that a constitution is put in place that can be easily amended later so that Iraq can achieve democracy.
